It’s National Women’s Month, and we feel so fortunate to have an incredible team of women here at Novva. We couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate than by bringing back our Meet the Team series, starting with Environmental Subject Matter Expert Sophia Gump.

Sophia Gump, Environmental SME HeadshotWhat does a typical day look like for you?

In my role, no two days are the same. I oversee most environmental compliance and sustainability activities for our data centers, ranging from air permitting to the development and maintenance of site sustainability profiles. Because nearly every facility is located in a different state, we coordinate with a range of state and local environmental agencies, each with its own requirements and expectations. In addition, each site presents unique operational and regulatory considerations. Evaluating these variables and driving practical, compliant solutions is a core part of my work.
Outside of work, what’s something you’re passionate about?
As an environmental subject matter expert, it may sound cliché, but I am a dedicated yogi. I was introduced to yoga years ago and make a point to practice at least once a week. I value the way it challenges me both mentally and physically, and I find that discipline carries over directly into my motivation and performance at work
What would you be doing if you weren’t working in the data center/tech/telecom industry?
I began my career in the Texas oil and gas industry. When I relocated to Utah, I initially planned to remain in that field, but quickly realized there was a much broader range of industries and opportunities available. After my first-round interview, I knew I wanted to join Novva. It’s interesting to think about how differently my path might have unfolded if I had taken another direction.
What is something that you think would surprise people to hear about you?

Transitioning from oil and gas to the data center industry was a significant pivot, and it often surprises people. That said, the experience and skills I developed in those earlier roles have had a direct and meaningful impact on my work here — both in terms of technical knowledge and how I approach projects. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the valuable lessons from those positions, and I’ve been able to carry that foundation with me to Novva.
