What is Greener Data?

What comes to mind when you hear the term “greener data”? Can you imagine a new green display on your iPhone? Maybe you envision the green code from “The Matrix” trilogy? Here at Novva, we define greener data as reducing the impact on the environment and improving the sustainability of the resources we consume both immediately and long term, and it also happens to be the title of a new project we recently had an opportunity to participate in.

Greener Data: Actionable Insights from Industry Leaders

This Earth Day, April 22, we are celebrating the release of “Greener Data: Actionable Insights from Industry Leaders.” This multi-author book features the voices, stories, and perspectives of leading decision-makers in the data center and network infrastructure industry. CEO Wes Swenson joined in to write a chapter for the book that discusses his passion for data centers and holistic environment sustainability.

It’s Not Easy Being Green

“It’s Not Easy Being Green” is not just a smash hit by Kermit the Frog; it’s also the title of Swenson’s chapter in the book. As a child of the ‘70s and ‘80s, Swenson’s awareness of environmental sustainability started when he was young, thanks to famous PSA campaigns from Woodsy Owl, Keep America Beautiful, and others. In his chapter, Swenson discusses what led him to environmentalism and sustainability, what providers should consider to reduce the environmental impact of data centers, and the steps every data center can take to begin its greener journey. Inspired by his own mission to create purpose-built data center facilities that are created with holistic sustainability in mind, Swenson imparts wisdom about data center site selection, waterless cooling, everyday choices that can impact sustainability, and meaningful design.

“I believe in a holistic approach that covers such major items as the sourcing of our energy to minor things such as refillable water bottles,” states Swenson in his chapter. “Waterless cooling and renewable energy are other big pieces of the pie. It is not just one consideration, but a cultural shift in reducing our impact on the environment to improve the quality of our lives and the lives of those who come after us.”
